If you’re looking for a content management system (CMS) to handle your personal or company website you’ve probably considered purchasing a software package. When comparing products we often think that more expensive equals better quality. This way of thinking isn’t always true with most products and it’s especially not true with content management systems.

There are many CMS options available, with more being developed all the time, and while they all do have differences, the basics don’t change much. The nuts and bolts of any CMS is to help make website maintenance simpler. Beyond that, each system varies slightly and has its own positives and negatives. Personal preference becomes a factor here, as every site requires different capabilities from its CMS.

Most site owners want bells and whistles and customized looks that make them stand out from the crowd. These features are often available with paid content management systems. But they’re typically available with free systems as well. In fact, almost any free CMS you choose will allow for as much customization as you’re capable of creating.

So the big question remains. Why pay for a content management system if the free ones are sufficient? There are really only two reasons why someone would pay for software and it has nothing to do with functionality.

The first is customer support. Software developers that charge users have a responsibility to ensure their product is working and to correct when it isn’t. This is a service that many webmasters use as a security blanket, so they know they can get quick help if it’s needed.

The second reason is training. This really only applies to large companies where multiple departments need to add content on a regular basis. Because there is a high possibility of people who don’t have advanced technology skills needing access to the CMS, training is often required. If it’s provided, the price of the CMS package will most certainly reflect the cost of training.

These are really the only times when paying for content management software is a necessity, and if you don’t find yourself in either of these situations, it’s probably a good idea to seek a reputable free CMS provider first. Of course, if you’ve given the free services a chance and they don’t have what you need, you can always buy the software as a last resort.
