Yard Sale Held To Incorporate Coupland incorporate

Hundreds of yards sales are scheduled to take place Saturday across Central Texas. In Williamson County, the money you spend at one sale could help, officially, create a town.

Residents in Coupland have come up with a creative approach to incorporation.

In Coupland, the Dance Hall and Inn were once the main attractions. But Friday, the landmarks were closed down.

Next door, Susan Schmidt and her neighbors carried boxes into to the old depot. The boxes were not for moving, but for a new attraction. Each box was filled with items donated for a Saturday community yard sale. Every penny raised, will be used to finance a campaign to save the town.

“We want to; well, this will help to pay for the survey. That we’re doing,” said Schmidt.

The plan is to incorporate Coupland. About $ 5,000 is needed. There’s concern that this Williamson County town, located along Hwy 95, could be a target for unfriendly annexation. Taylor is to the north, Elgin is to the south, and just west of the cemetery is Pflugerville.

“And the whole thing is we just want to remain, Coupland,” said Schmidt.

It’s going to be like packing the pews in the town’s historic St. Peter’s church. To incorporate, state law requires a population of more than 200 people within 2 square miles. A tall order for an area where livestock dominate the surrounding hills.

Coupland dates back to the 1890′s and has long been a link to the past. The town was founded by a former Travis County Sheriff. Cotton and the rail-road drove the economy. There were banks, stores, pool halls – barber shops and even a local baseball team. Despite its growth- the town was never incorporated.

Becky Sutton’s grand father once owned a store here. The effort, she says, is not anti growth- its simply about independence.

“New people moving in love it just as much as we do, and we try to make them feel as much at home as we do,” said Sutton.

Artisans like Tim Huntington – a New York – transplant – have walked across the welcome mat. His corner garden of sculptures is an example of the freedom residents want to protect.

“The only chance we have is to use government to protect ourselves from government, it’s like watching the firemen lighting that backfires to stop a greater conflagration, that’s basically what we’re being force to do,” said Huntington.

A vote to incorporate could take place in May. A petition drive to get 50 signatures is the next step. If Coupland incorporates, organizers say the goal is to have very few regulations and a very low tax rate.

Controversy swirls around LWR straw poll incorporate

LAKEWOOD RANCH — Although it is not an official vote, the straw poll on whether Lakewood Ranch should incorporate is starting to heat up controversy.

About 130 registered voters who live in Lakewood Ranch never received their straw poll ballots in the mail, say Friends of Lakewood Ranch, an anti-incorporation group who claim the United States Postal Service doesn’t forward presorted standard mail.

However, a national representative from the Postal Service said Thursday that “standard mail is forwarded with specific instructions from the mailer.”

Keith Davey, one of those of the leaders of the Lakewood Ranch Incorporation Study Group, the group funding the straw poll, said nearly 12,000 ballots were mailed and about 1,400 of those were mailed to registered voters who are not at their local address.

“We have heard from hundreds of people out of state who have gotten their ballots,” Davey said.

Friends of Lakewood Ranch said straw poll results will be flawed if every eligible voter is not given the chance to vote and would like for those who didn’t get their ballots to be provided one.

“We want every registered voter who wants to vote, to be able to vote,” said Gary Berns, chairman of Friends of Lakewood Ranch.

Since all ballots must be postmarked by Aug. 22 to count in the tally, Berns said he would like time to be allotted for those voters who did not get ballots to get one.

Berns said he doesn’t care on which side of the issue those who did not receive ballots fall.

“We want every registered voter, who wants to vote, to be able to vote,” he said.

Since the straw poll itself, technically, does not hold any legal weight and is not part of an official election, that might not happen.

A majority yes vote on the issue would demonstrate support for the measure to members of the Manatee and Sarasota legislative delegations responsible for filing a special act of the Legislature to pave the way for possible cityhood.

Berns and others feel the straw poll is important because if the no vote wins, efforts to incorporate would cease, as promised by Lakewood Ranch Incorporation Study Group.

Straw polls aren’t required to incorporate, according to Rep. Greg Steube, R-Bradenton, whose office is not connected to the polling.

“I think it is good and very beneficial to the residents that they are conducting a straw poll,” he said. “I think you will get a good feeling of what the mood of the community is.”

Hypothetical case:
Me and my 3 other partners are planning to start my own business and would like to incorporate it to take advantage of the corporation tax benefit. However, all the partners are concerned about our eligibility because we have only 100000 start up cost available.

My question is is there any minimum cost required to incorporate the business?

In most states, the answer is no minimum or a very minor amount ($ 10 to $ 25). However, each U.S. state has it own laws on incorporation. There is also paperwork which must be filed with the state and there are filing fees. Also, some states charge an annual minimum corporation tax. NYS’ used to be $ 250.

The specifics depend on the state that you are in. But, with $ 100,000 of start up capital you would meet all states’ minimums.

It turns out that your smartphone can do more than remember where you parked your car or mimic a Magic 8 Ball.

If you’re a college coach with the right service, your phone (or iPad, or computer) also could stop you from committing an NCAA violation.

A veritable app farm has sprung up in the past year, with companies promising everything from better organization of information about recruits to tools that will warn you when you’re about to cross college sports’ hard-charging governing body. Outfits from Jump Forward to Bluechip Athletic Solutions to ASC Athletics — and many more — charge athletic departments roughly $ 500 to many thousands per year to provide a service that will be accessible almost anywhere coaches can drive or fly.

Many of the companies were created to corral large amounts of data on recruits, but most have incorporated into their services mechanisms to help schools avoid breaking the rules.

Los Angeles-based FieldLevel, for instance, grew out of a student business plan at USC crafted by club lacrosse captain Kai Sato and varsity baseball player Brenton Sullivan. Last summer when the NCAA hammered USC for failing to prevent Heisman Trophy winner Reggie Bush from receiving improper benefits, athletic director Pat Haden hired FieldLevel to centralize the Trojans’ recruiting data.

The FieldLevel app includes the NCAA’s rules and bylaws, and warns coaches when they are about to call out of season or text-message a recruit — both violations. Using cloud computing, the service also incorporates data from any registered device, meaning a call made to a recruit from an assistant coach traveling in Florida will be logged to prevent a head coach in Corvallis or Eugene (for example) from inadvertently making a repeat call 10 minutes later.

Such services have become all but compulsory at big-time football programs — Oregon and Oregon State use Atlanta-based Bluechip — but clients go all the way down to the junior-college level.

“What we’re finding right now, and especially this summer, is we’re getting a lot of interest, especially in the Pac-12, from basketball coaches,” FieldLevel’s Sato said. “It’s kind of that, they’ve already played with fire and gotten burned a little bit as a group.”

California’s men’s program, you might recall, got singed with two years’ probation for making 365 impermissible phone calls.

Front Rush, the New Jersey-based company that counts Oregon as a client (but not the football or men’s basketball teams), works with about 8,000 coaches on 3,000 teams nationwide, said Brad Downs, director of sales and marketing.

Downs declined to outline the company’s prices but said industry leaders can charge anywhere from $ 1,000 to “tens of thousands” for the service.

“If you’re a Hoover vacuum-cleaner salesman, you’re not going to use Excel spreadsheets,” Downs said. “You’re going to use Salesforce.com. It’s the same concept — coaches selling their program. They need something to manage their sales leads. That’s what we do.”

As the urgency to comply with rules has increased with NCAA enforcement, however, Front Rush and other businesses have added mechanisms to help keep coaches compliant. No ping or warning light, however, can prevent every problem.

“Ultimately, if a coach is going to cheat,” Downs said, “they’re going to cheat.”

Question by Singergrl: How to incorporate more water into my diet?
Everytime i find myself drinking something it seems to be pop or some other sugary drink. Although I drink milk and orange juice alot sometimes. Anyway I really wanna incorporate more water in my diet I just don’t know how. I don’t just wanna give up my sugary drinks just like that, but I do wanna start drinking more healthy drinks and maybe in awhile I’ll have an even balance. Any suggestions?

Drink more water, maybe put it in a glass you can even use a straw if you want

Whether your business is as simple as renting bikes or Segways, or as sophisticated as auto racing, if you’re self-employed, you’ve got a decision to make: should you incorporate?

Timothy Bumps, Motor Sports Manager, says, “I incorporated because at this point in my life I decided I wanted to become my own boss. There are some tax advantages to becoming incorporated… “

That’s the answer for racing consultant Tim Bumps. But not necessarily the right answer. First, being your own boss doesn’t require that you incorporate. And taxes?

Dan Humbert, Attorney, says, “I wouldn’t say as a general rule that you have any tax benefit to a corporation over not being incorporated.”

So if it isn’t being your own boss and it isn’t taxes, why do people pay lawyers to incorporate?

Humbert says, “If they’re in a profession or field that involves a high level of risk, or even a substantial level of risk, a corporation might be a good idea, because with a corporation or LLC you have limited liability.”

But the risk this lawyer is referring to isn’t risk of life or limb…insurance covers that.

It’s the risk of being sued or otherwise being on the hook for a bunch of money. Because the corporation’s money is legally separated from yours. Protecting your personal assets…that’s one reason to incorporate.

Another time to consider a corporation or other formal arrangement? When you have partners. So what everybody owns and what everybody owes is all spelled out.

Bottom line? If you’ve got a small business, don’t be in a huge rush to incorporate. You can take your time and ‘Segway’ into it. But, if you do need to incorporate, I can definitely show you how to do it for less. Check out Money Talks News.com.
