Shuler’s campaign failed to report $ 1M in spending

ASHEVILLE — A company that helped fill out campaign fiance reports is taking the blame for failing to report $ 1 million in spending by U.S. Rep. Heath Shuler late in his re-election campaign last year.

The person responsible for the error was fired, Brett Smiley, one of the founders of Campaign Finance Officers, told the Asheville Citizen-Times.

Shuler’s campaign paid the company $ 30,000 over the past two-year election cycle to compile and file campaign finance reports.

The Democrat’s campaign first reported the error in a January letter to the Federal Election Commission, and also filed amended reports covering spending from July 1 through Nov. 22.

Shuler hasn’t heard from the FCC since filing the amended reports, spokesman Andrew Whalen said. But FCC investigations are kept secret until they are completed.

Most of the unreported money was spent on a Washington firm, Buying Time LLC, which buys advertisements.

Shuler didn’t gain any advantage in his tough re-election fight through the error, Whalen said.

His opponent agrees. Hendersonville businessman Jeff Miller said the unreported spending happened so late in the campaign it wouldn’t have changed the Republican’s strategy in his unsuccessful attempt to knock off the Democrat, now in his third term in the 11th District in far western North Carolina.

But Miller did say he was stunned when Shuler’s finance report filed just before Election Day showed he had $ 1.2 million in his campaign account.

DynaCom buys Cantera building

Naperville-based DynaCom Management has purchased a new building in the Cantera subdivision of Warrenville. The addition will increase its overall office building portfolio by almost 25 percent.

The building, which totals 48,000 square feet, is at 4580 Weaver Parkway in Warrenville. The sale, which closed Jan. 26, will transfer the building’s ownership from Houghton International to DynaCom Management.

The vacant building is scheduled to reopen in the spring, following a complete renovation. DynaCom is set to convert the property from a lab and office space to a multi-tenant office building with renovations, including the addition of public washrooms, common hallways, a grand lobby entrance and 50 more parking stalls.
