The buyer of investmentproperty.com.au is Hunter Valley property developer Vision Homes. Comment is being sought from the owner Steve Rollan.

Anthony Ziino, the previous owner who let the domain name expire, did not know the name had expired when reached by phone but said he was going to investigate.

The next highest public .com.au sale was hardware.com.au, bought by Woolworths late last year for $ 33,000.

But private sales, while difficult to track and verify, are often much higher. The highest on record is flowers.com.au, which sold for $ 153,000.

Poker.com.au and deals.com.au both sold privately for $ 100,000 each while creditcards.com.au sold several years ago for $ 70,000.

But the .com.au records pale in comparison with .com domain sales. Sex.com is the most expensive domain name globally and sold in November last year for $ US13 million.

Domain name industry players on the DNTrade.com.au forum predicted investmentproperty.com.au would sell for $ 10,000, so the final price of $ 125,000 blew away their expectations.

Lye said those who don’t invest in domain names professionally often drove the higher prices as they commonly had their eye on a particular name for some time and were emotionally attached to it. Companies see it as a marketing expense.

“In terms of marketing to spend $ 10-, $ 20- or $ 30,000 on a domain name is not that huge compared to the rest of the costs of marketing their business,” he said.

“People are just beginning to realise that domain names are valuable and in this day and age it’s essential for pretty much all businesses to be online.

“One of the ways to get to the top quickly is with a good domain name. As more domains are registered, supply is limited so it generally commands higher prices.”

The Australian domain name industry has been in the news this week due to a dispute over mirandakerr.com.au and death threats being made against a prominent industry player.

Question by Jerrycream: How to check out WEB SITE DESIGN in multiple browsers and systems? Webmasters?
So I’ve been doing web design for a couple years, and a main problem is making sure the site shows up the same (or relevantly the same) in all browsers and systems. I know some of them are very different. So my question is to you web masters out there with this experience, how do you go about this? what is your process of making sure your site comes out clean in all browsers/systems?

That’s a great question! It’s nice to see a web designer who cares about his work.

Well the 1st thing you should do is download the following browsers on to your computer: Firefox/Mozilla, IE, Opera & Safari. These browsers represent at least 90% of the internet. Having all these browsers on your computer will allow you to check your progress while designing, so you don’t get to far into a design/feature of a website that doesn’t look good or doesn’t work in one of these. The next best thing you can do is to make sure you design your websites to be XHTML & CSS compliant (visit www.w3c.org for details and to validate) using software such as Adobe Dreamweaver or Microsoft Expression. This will help with cross-browser compatibility also.

Walk against domestic violence planned Sunday

LAWRENCE — A walk to raise awareness about violence against women is planned Sunday at 1 p.m. starting outside Chester’s at 60 Island St.

Participants will go up Essex Street, across Broadway, and up Canal Street before returning to Island Street. The walk kicks off the V-Day V-Day Lawrence campaign, which has been held in the city for the past four years.

“People don’t recognize domestic violence for what it is,” said organizer Corinne Geary, director. “They don’t know the impact of it and how it affects every member of the family.”

Squirrel caused quick power outage

METHUEN — Animal interference caused a quick power outage for residents of east Methuen yesterday morning. National Grid spokesman David Graves said a squirrel disrupted some power lines at the east Methuen substation, causing what he called a 15-second power outage at 8:22 a.m. The company switched service for the customers over to another substation to fix the problem.

Soon after NutraOrigin decided that its site need a major redesign, the vitamin and nutritional supplement retailer realized that it had to maintain a strict budget, about 15% of projected first-year revenue.

While some might question whether that’s too much for a smaller company to spend on a new web site, the budget was justified, says director of marketing Timothy Peterson, who will share how he arrived at the first-year spending cap on the site redesign and why that budget worked at the Internet Retailer 2011 Web Design & Usability Conference in a session entitled  “Costing out a web site redesign.”

 “It has to be high early on,” he says. “I’ve been with other businesses that came and went, and part of the reason was that there wasn’t necessarily smart investment, smart testing and good technology. If you have those things in place early, the expense of your first year will easily be recouped in years two, three, four and five.”

Moreover, those costs are defrayed because maintenance for a redesigned site should decrease substantially in subsequent years, he adds.

After determining how much to spend on a site redesign, they key to staying within that budget while developing a functional and effective site is prioritizing spending, says Peterson. With the help of web design firm Tellus, NutraOrigin accomplished that by focusing first on site elements that would deliver the greatest return in the shortest time. For example, functionality that would allow it to quickly change and target promotions was critical.

Disciplined spending also meant saying no to other attractive site elements and features until later on, according to Peterson. For example, NutraOrigin considered but decided against multi-tiered navigation tabs across the top of the home page.  

Thanks to smart spending on the redesign traffic on the new site has increased to more than 1,000 visitors per day from the old site’s average of fewer than 100 per day, and its conversion rate is up to more than 2.4% from 0.25%, Peterson says.

In the session Peterson will examine strategies for determining how much a retailer should spend on a web site redesign, what goes into making that decision, and how to estimate the costs and calculate the return.
