RALEIGH, N.C., Oct. 5, 2011 /PRNewswire/ — As part of Mental Illness Awareness Week, the National Alliance on Mental Illness (NAMI) North Carolina today urged Congress to reject cuts to Medicare and Medicaid that could jeopardize the health of millions of North Carolinians living with mental illness.

The Congressional Joint Select Committee on Deficit Reduction, or “supercommittee,”—created by the recently passed federal debt ceiling legislation—is charged with recommending an additional $ 1.2 trillion in deficit cuts by November 23. All health care programs are potentially at risk for cuts, and Medicaid and Medicare may be prime targets.

“Mental Illness Awareness Week takes on a special significance this year as Congress debates spending cuts that could hurt millions of North Carolinians living with mental illness,” said Deby Dihoff, Executive Director of NAMI North Carolina. “Medicare and Medicaid make it possible for many people to get the essential treatments and medications they need. If the supercommittee recommends deep cuts to Medicare and Medicaid, we will be putting our most vulnerable citizens at risk.”

“There is no doubt that we need to reduce federal spending, but disenfranchising the elderly and underprivileged won’t solve the deficit crisis,” continued Dihoff. “Medicare and Medicaid provide preventative care by allowing patients to avoid more serious, and costly, conditions. Medicare Part D, for example, annually reduces federal spending by $ 12 billion by giving elderly Americans access to medications that keep them out of the emergency room. Without Medicare Part D, many seniors would have to forego their prescriptions altogether—resulting in a greater burden on taxpayers for reactive healthcare.”

NAMI and 25 other national advocacy groups sent a letter to members of the congressional supercommittee. The letter urges members to protect Medicare—specifically the prescription drug benefit known as Part D—as they look for ways to reduce federal spending before the November deadline.

Medicare Part D gives more than 29 million Americans access to prescription drugs at prices they can afford. Before the creation of Medicare Part D in 2006, many treatments were too expensive for as much as a third of the elderly population.  A recent Harvard Medical School study published in the Journal of the American Medical Association found that the improved access to medications under Medicare Part D actually saves Medicare $ 12 billion each year. According to the study, Part D has reduced other healthcare expenses—especially costly inpatient care—by about 10 percent per patient. While other healthcare costs continue to increase dramatically, Medicare Part D actually reduces health care expenditures.

I’m looking for an open source content management system to build an article directory like Ezines or GoArticles. I’m very familiar with WordPress, but it doesn’t seem like that would be a good platform. It would have to be a system where users could register, submit articles and manage their accounts. Maybe some sort of plugin for Joomla?

Trades made with brokers in the spot foreign exchange (forex of FX) market, are subject to receiving interest or being debited interest, if positions are held overnight. This is known as rollover interest. This article will explain why rollover occurs and how traders can profit (or understand the debits) from it. We’ll also take a look at the tax considerations of rollover interest.

What Is Rollover Interest?
Rollover interest is paid or debited to traders who have open currency positions at 5 p.m. EST each day the trade is open. Trades opened before 5 p.m. EST and held until after this time, are considered to be held overnight and, thus, are subject to interest credit or debits depending on the position the trader has open.

Whether a credit or debit is applied to the trader’s account is determined by which country’s currency the trader bought or sold relative to another country’s currency. All currencies trade in pairs, meaning one country’s currency is always relative to another country’s currency. An example of this is the EUR/USD. Therefore, the amount of interest received by the trader, for holding the EUR/USD pair overnight, will be determined by the difference in interest rates prevailing in each location when the rollover occurs.

In most cases, retail forex brokers automatically roll over trades. Retail brokers do this to prevent traders, most of whom are speculators, from having to deliver actual currency to the party on the other side of the trade. Settlement, which is the day the trader would have to deliver actual currency to the person on the opposing side of the trade, is two days after the transaction took place. With brokers rolling over positions, trades can be left open without actual delivery of the full value of the currency position taking place. If rollover did not occur, the trader would be required to deliver the face value of the currency. This is because the forex market is where we trade contracts in which one currency is exchanged for another; this is to be delivered in two business days.

Rollover interest is paid or debited based on the total value of the trade, and not simply the margin used for the trade. For example, if a trader is holding one lot of EUR/USD, he or she will be credited or debited interest on $ 100,000 (the full value of one lot), and not only the margin put up for the trade.

It is also important to note that rollover is not a charge for using leverage. It is a common misconception that if rollover is debited from a trader this is the cost of the leverage that a broker provided for this trader. This is not the case. The debit or credit is based on the difference between the interest rates of the countries involved in the currency pair the trader is holding.

Credits and Debits to Trading Account
Credits or debits, in interest, are paid based on which currency, in the currency pair, the trader has purchased and whether that country’s currency has a higher or lower interest rate attached to it. For example, if a trader purchases the USD/JPY pair, meaning they buy the U.S. dollar and sells the Japanese yen, and the dollar has a higher interest rate (2%) than the yen (0.5%), then the trader will be credited the interest rate differential – roughly 1.5% a year (unleveraged). If the trader sells the USD/JPY, meaning they sell the dollar and buys the yen, then they would be debited the interest rate differential between the two countries.

Simply put, a trader will be paid interest each day that they hold the higher interest-bearing currency, or will be debited each day that they hold the lower interest-bearing currency. Countries’ interest rates are determined by a number of economic factors and change over time.

Because banks around the world are generally closed on Saturday’s and Sunday’s, the interest for these days is applied on Wednesday. This means that if a trade is left open on Wednesday and is held after 5 p.m. EST, that trade will be credited or debited for an extra two days of interest.

Brokers automatically do all of this for traders. A credit or debit will simply be shown in the account for each position that was open at 5 p.m. EST. This could happen through a debit or credit in the trader’s account, normally under a “rollover” or “roll” heading. It may also be debited or credited to a trader by way of an adjustment in the entry price.

Profiting from Rollover
Receiving rollover is an additional income stream over and above regular capital gains. For this reason, trades can be set up not only to take advantage of capital gains, but also interest income. Day traders can allow positions to stay open slightly longer to gain interest income, if they are long a higher interest rate bearing currency. Also, swing traders and investors may decide to only take longer term positions in currency pairs where they can be long the higher interest rate bearing currency.

Additionally, if a trader expects that a currency pair will remain relatively flat for the year, or finish the year around current values, they can take advantage of the interest rate differential on the currencies, and make a handsome profit, if in fact the currencies do stay around the same value (this also assumes interest rates don’t change). If an investor goes along the EUR/JPY believing they will close the year at roughly the same value, they can make a large profit by using forex market leverage. A 2% profit due to the interest rate differential could mean a 20% return if 10:1 leverage is used. This also means the investor could lose 2% (or 20% or more if leveraged at this level or higher) just by holding the lower interest bearing currency for a year.

Tax Considerations
Rollover interest is much like the interest paid to a bank account balance. Thus, rollover is taxed as interest income, and should be kept track of separately from capital gains for tax purposes. Brokers show interest received and debited in online trading activity statements.

The Bottom Line
Rollover is interest that is debited or credited to a trader’s accounts when positions are held after 5 p.m. EST. Whether interest is credited depends on whether the trader is long the higher interest rate bearing currency. If they are, they’ll receive a credit; if not, they’ll receive a debit. Rollover is done automatically, and nothing is required of the trader except to track interest separately for tax purposes (listed within the account reports). Rollover is calculated on the full value of the position, and, thus, can provide additional profit for the trader or cause a decrease in profits, or increase in losses.

The movie is narrated like a fable, but incorporates the Internet. The interesting pairing kept me at the edge of my seat. I wondered – where is this going, what will be the conclusion and what’s the moral of the story? 

I don’t want to spoil all of the fun for you… Watch it above before you read on.

YU: What inspired you to make this film?

AB: A side of the Internet that we’ve probably all experienced at some point. The way searches can become rabbit holes into strange places. The sometimes faceless, heart-breaking loneliness of the Internet. The sense of people talking but not connecting.

YU: In watching this, the story is told like a  fable with a modern twist. So what’s the moral of the story?

AB: It definitely is made in the style of fable or story – and references a clear-cut morality tale… but… whether the film actually has a moral, I’m not really sure. Really it’s not me telling the story, it’s the narrator. And he doesn’t really seem to know what to make of it by the end.

YU: At the risk of sounding really stupid, I just have to ask, what was real in the film and what was fake?

AB: I think people have enjoyed finding out for themselves what’s real in this and what’s not. I don’t think it would have resonated with people if there wasn’t some truth in it. 

YU: What has been the general reaction to this movie of yours?

This is already a far bigger reaction than I thought it would ever get. It feels great, but it also puts a lot of pressure on me for my future films… They won’t be at all like it!

So there you have it. I will have to agree with Butcher – the best  part about the film is the mystery of whether or not the bits and pieces of the tale are real or fake. It almost seems like both the narrator and Butcher encourage viewers to do some Internet digging of their own. If you’re that curious, you’ll find yourself uncovering your own rabbit holes like the man in the film, creating your own web adventure. We just hope your search doesn’t lead to death.

Mark Lye, CEO of Netfleet, the domain name aftermarket where the name was sold, said the final price was “quite exceptional” but the previous owners who let it expire would be “kicking themselves”.

“It’s a schoolboy error really for a domain of that value to not renew it in time,” he said.

“For whatever reason they might not have got their renewal notices via email. Registrars will send out renewal notices on domains – 90 days before it expires, then 60, then 30; people may procrastinate and put it off and not renew it, maybe forget about it, and then the domain expires and then they’ve lost it. “

The buyer of investmentproperty.com.au is Hunter Valley property developer Vision Homes. Comment is being sought from the owner Steve Rollan.

Anthony Ziino, the previous owner who let the domain name expire, did not know the name had expired when reached by phone but said he was going to investigate.

The next highest public .com.au sale was hardware.com.au, bought by Woolworths late last year for $ 33,000.

But private sales, while difficult to track and verify, are often much higher. The highest on record is flowers.com.au, which sold for $ 153,000.

Poker.com.au and deals.com.au both sold privately for $ 100,000 each while creditcards.com.au sold several years ago for $ 70,000.

But the .com.au records pale in comparison with .com domain sales. Sex.com is the most expensive domain name globally and sold in November last year for $ US13 million.

Domain name industry players on the DNTrade.com.au forum predicted investmentproperty.com.au would sell for $ 10,000, so the final price of $ 125,000 blew away their expectations.

Lye said those who don’t invest in domain names professionally often drove the higher prices as they commonly had their eye on a particular name for some time and were emotionally attached to it. Companies see it as a marketing expense.

“In terms of marketing to spend $ 10-, $ 20- or $ 30,000 on a domain name is not that huge compared to the rest of the costs of marketing their business,” he said.

“People are just beginning to realise that domain names are valuable and in this day and age it’s essential for pretty much all businesses to be online.

“One of the ways to get to the top quickly is with a good domain name. As more domains are registered, supply is limited so it generally commands higher prices.”

The Australian domain name industry has been in the news this week due to a dispute over mirandakerr.com.au and death threats being made against a prominent industry player.
