“Summertime: and the livin’ is easy. Fish are jumpin’ and the cotton is high …” Along with the Sportin’ Life of summer, comes the down side. In Catfish Alley, it was hurricanes, gambling and drugs. In modern times, it’s college students selling door-to-door and MLM schemes.

What’s an MLM scheme? MLM, or multilevel marketing is polite parlance for pyramid schemes. Amway, Nikken magnet therapy, Vita-Life, Cutco, Monavie Acai juice, Primerica Insurance: whatever the product, MLM schemes operate not to sell product directly but to get sellers to “network” and get their acquaintances to sell for them (thus the pyramid configuration).

MLM marketing can’t be called networking. Networking means a level playing field and collaboration. MLM salespeople are encouraged to get people to sell “under” or “for” them. That’s where the multi-level comes in. MLM sales are exploitative, unethical and in some cases, illegal.

Why is summertime prime sales season? MLM schemes abound year-round. However some prey on college students. They use summer vacation to rope kids in with promises of big money. However, college students are prime targets for temporarily unemployed cheap labor.

I got my first college kid MLM call this weekend, for Cutco Knives (Vector Marketing). As is typical of an MLM sales call, it generally comes from someone you rarely see, barely know or haven’t heard from in years. Your real friends won’t try to sell you on a product. Friendships take time to grow and usually don’t thrive on shared business. In fact, the best way to lose a friend is to enter into a business partnership with him.

You’ll know it’s an MLM scam if they tell you that they have just discovered “the wonders of (insert product name)” and want to share this good news with you. They refer not to the product but the “way of life,” “concept” or “philosophy” of the company. Salespeople present the product as larger-than-life; an answer to all your prayers.

My 13-year-old said it sounded like the salesperson was going to tell us about Jesus. MLM schemes are a form of evangelism. Some companies prey on religious sensibilities; they call themselves Christian companies. The company becomes a cult and the salespeople, disciples.

MLMs differ from door-to-door sales. An MLM salesperson will try to set up an appointment at your home. They are told not to reveal the company that they work for until they have made contact with you (and gotten you enthusiastic about the concept). These companies operate on the worst forms of impulse and mass hysteria buying principles.

To get you excited about their product they use every psychological trick in the book. They make exaggerated promises about the product (vast earning potential, extensive health benefits). Some of the companies may make very good products; the issue isn’t with the product, it’s with the deceitful sales techniques.

There is debate over whether Primerica insurance, for example, is a scam. I’ve subscribed to Primerica because a family member sold it. It’s not a scam, but it is an MLM scheme. Amway’s cleaning products work well. Cutco makes a decent knife. VitaLIFE makes a quality vitamin. Acai juice does cleanse the liver. Will they revolutionize your life as promised? No. They may put you in the poor house.

These products claim to have exclusive technology. That’s also misinformation. You can usually find the equivalent at any local merchandiser. I found precisely the same vitamin at Meijer for $ 8 a bottle compared to Vita-Life’s $ 40 a month plan. My $ 15 IKEA knife can hold its weight against a Cutco any day. Stripped of its emotional appeal, you’re left with some very limited products: vitamins, cleaning products and knives.
