New York, NY (PRWEB) February 23, 2011

Backup My Info! (BUMI), a premium provider of managed online backup and recovery solutions for small to mid-sized businesses, today announced the findings of its Q4 2010 industry survey, which established that disaster recovery and business continuity are primary reasons organizations backup their critical data. Despite these key drivers, the survey found that only 55% of respondents are confident that their data will be restored completely within hours of a disaster. BUMI also created an infographic of the survey’s results, which highlights the most intriguing findings.

According to the results of the survey, more than 37% of respondents believe the cost of downtime is “thousands of dollars per hour.” This reinforces the need for all organizations to have a fully managed backup service in place. Survey results also revealed that online data backup (65%) is the most popular way that respondents are backing up their information, while internal appliances (34%) and tape backups (29%) are the next most common ways.

“Today, almost every business relies on a collection of critical data that is growing every day,” said Jennifer Walzer, CEO at Backup My Info!, Inc. “As the amount of data residing on servers, desktops and laptops expands, businesses must think about recovery first, and then develop a strategy to ensure their most critical data is in the best position to be restored. Doing so will protect these assets, keep costs under control, and ensure a fast recovery time.”

Survey Highlights:

Disaster recovery and business continuity are key drivers. Disaster recovery (89%), business continuity (73%) and security (52%) were the most common reasons to backup a company’s critical data.

Cost of downtime varies. Forty-seven percent of respondents agree that the cost of downtime is “hundreds of dollars per hour,” while 37% say it costs “thousands of dollars per hour.”

Comparing recovery time for critical data versus non-critical data. Most organizations (40%) believe that “within four hours” is an acceptable recovery window (the time it takes for your recovered data to be accessible) for critical data. However, in terms of non-critical data, the majority (42%) believe that one business day is an acceptable timeframe.

Not every organization checks the status of its backup process on a daily basis. Only 52% of respondents check their backup process on a daily basis. Fourteen percent of respondents say they check on a weekly basis, while 9% say they never check.

Technical service and support is more important than price when selecting a backup vendor. Seventy-nine percent of respondents believe that technical service and support are more important than price (60%) when selecting a backup vendor. Data security (72%) and speed of recovery (61%) also scored high as important decision criteria.

Data that is important to backup varies from organization to organization. Database files (83%) were the most important information that needs to be backed up, according to respondents. Financial data (79%), email (73%), and productivity applications (52%) also scored high. Video files (19%) were the least important data to be backed up, based on the options given.

BUMI Recommendations:

Backup your business-critical data to a secure location, and ensure that the data is properly backed up and stored offsite.

Run disaster recovery test drills on a regular basis – make certain you can recover the necessary data in the event of a disaster to the designated alternate location.

Prioritize all of your applications/systems to ensure that your recovery plan restores your most critical data first.

Document your disaster recovery plan and make sure it is accessible in case of any disaster.

Invest in an online data backup and recovery solution that includes a simple pricing structure, no additional costs for restores or support, and proactive monitoring of all data backup processes by senior level engineers.

Data backup is not a “set and forget” operation – it needs to be continuously monitored by experts who know your environment and know how to restore your applications/data properly.

The survey was conducted during the fourth quarter of 2010 and is based on responses from 117 business owners, CEOs and IT professionals at small to medium sized businesses. Industries represented include financial services firms, insurance companies, technology firms, healthcare organizations and many more.
The StorageTek T10000C is the industry’s fastest and highest capacity tape drive with a 5TB native capacity and 240MB/second native throughput – more than 3x the capacity, and 50 to 70 percent faster than any other tape drive, including LTO-5 and the IBM TS1130. Compared to disk-only solutions from EMC, Oracle’s StorageTek solution scales to 30x the capacity, and 50x the performance, while requiring 99 percent less power and cooling.

The capacity and throughput increase helps customers drastically reduce the cost of enterprise storage, while providing the fastest backup and archive solutions. Oracle’s StorageTek tape storage solutions are the first to scale to an exabyte (1000 PB, with 2:1 compression) to handle the world’s largest archive and long-term backup requirements.

The solutions include in-line encryption which provides the critical data protection that enterprise customers demand while remaining completely transparent to the application and without any performance degradation. With the first exabyte capacity tape system, Oracle stores 17x more data in one tape library unit and provides 5x more performance than IBM, and more than 30x the capacity and 50x the performance of EMC’s disk solutions.

For open systems archives, Oracle’s Sun Storage Archive Manager software provides simple, policy-based management of data across disk and tape tiers. Paired with the Oracle Exadata Database Machine, the StorageTek T10000C shortens the backup window by 33 percent. For open systems backup, Oracle’s StorageTek tape drives are qualified with Oracle Secure Backup software, as well as with industry-leading backup software as part of a disk-to-disk-to-tape (D-D-T) architecture.

For mainframe environments, the StorageTek T10000C is fully supported by Oracle’s StorageTek Virtual Storage Manager, which provides the unique capability of policy-based management across Fibre Channel disk, SAS disk, fast access tape, and high capacity tape. The StorageTek T10000C tape drive extends Oracle’s leadership in providing an integrated data protection solution with Oracle 11g Recovery Manager, Oracle Secure Backup and Oracle’s Sun Storage Archive Manager software running with Oracle Solaris and Oracle Linux, and Oracle Exadata Database Machine, Oracle’s Sun SPARC Enterprise Servers, Oracle’s Sun Fire x86 clustered systems and Oracle’s Sun Storage and Oracle’s StorageTek Tape.

The new tape drive also runs with leading third-party operating systems, open systems storage management products and mainframe storage management software.

“The release of the StorageTek T10000C tape drive reaffirms Oracle’s undisputed leadership in tape technology,” said James Cates, vice president, Hardware Development, Oracle. “The StorageTek T10000C sets the new standard in tape by storing over three times more data on a single cartridge than any other tape drive. Combining it with the StorageTek SL3000 and SL8500 libraries helps ensure that customers, regardless of size, can afford to retain critical data without concern for future scalability.”

“Enterprise customers continue to grapple with unabated data growth, extremely long retention periods, short backup windows, as well as budget and floor space constraints,” said Robert Amatruda, Director, Data Protection and Recovery, IDC. “The StorageTek T10000C tape drive, coupled with the StorageTek SL8500 and SL3000 enterprise libraries, addresses customer requirements for high-capacity and cost-effective tape solutions enabling them greater efficiency for their backup, archive and recovery needs. Additionally, The StorageTek T10000C tape drive demonstrates Oracle’s commitment to future innovations in its tape technology.”

Tape data recovery

Question by dunric: Question about data archiving and recovery?
I am a former student at NAU and needed to see what mail I received and/or sent during a month-timeframe several years ago. However, I do not know if such data is stored or even kept in backup archives (such as tape backup or microfiche).

This would be the Dana system at Northern Arizona University. I am trying to re-establish contact with a computer user I sent a game to in 1996 (which, unfortunately, I no longer have the original of or even same source code).

Thanks,

Paul
Yes, I just now contacted NAU via email but have not received a reply as of yet.

Targeted at enterprise data centers, the new StorageTek T10000C promises to deliver a low total cost of ownership with a data-center footprint that only occupies one-third to one-fifth the floor space of any other tiered storage, archiving or backup offering.

Rarely does hardware engineering deliver in a single generation a product which is multiples of the product capability before it, noted Oracle Executive Vice President John Fowler. Five terabytes on a single cartridge is “a dramatic leap in performance capacity,” Fowler said. “Now Oracle can deliver 17 times the capacity and five times the performance of IBM — allowing [enterprises] to rethink the economics of large-scale storage.”

A ‘Real Change’ in Trajectory

According to Oracle, the T10000C offers more than three times the data capacity of other single-cartridge storage solutions while achieving tape transfer speeds that are 50 to 70 percent faster than rival tape drives. As a result, the new platform can significantly reduce the total cost of ownership (TCO) for enterprises, noted Oracle Vice President James Cates.

“This is not your average enhancement — it’s a real change in the trajectory of tape products [with] a TCO that’s 23 percent lower than the competition,” Cates said. “Combining it with the StorageTek SL3000 and SL8500 libraries helps ensure that customers, regardless of size, can afford to retain critical data without concern for future scalability.”

With the StorageTek T10000C, Oracle’s aim is to help enterprise customers continue to grapple with unabated data growth, extremely long retention periods, short backup windows, and budget and floor-space constraints, said IDC Data Protection and Recovery Director Robert Amatruda. “Other tape vendors will really need to advance their offerings to match the performance of the Storage T10000C tape drive,” he observed.

The European particle-physics research organization CERN, which currently stores 40 petabytes of data and expects to add another 25 petabytes each year, is currently testing Oracle’s StorageTek T10000C platform.

“We can confirm the announced [performance] figures,” said CERN Tape Service Manager Vladimir Bahyl. “We expect it to meet our requirements, while its unprecedented capacity and throughput will lead to additional cost savings.”

Reducing Backup Windows

Achieving a native throughput of 240MB/second, the StorageTek T10000C helps alleviate data bottlenecks by enabling the streaming of data directly to the cache. Moreover, Oracle’s new tape-storage platform will enable “data centers to back up 5TB of data in under six hours to a single drive,” noted Clipper Group Senior Analyst David Reine.

The file-sync and tape-application accelerators aboard Oracle’s new platform help to reduce the starts and stops that wear on the tape drive and media. Additionally, the new platform is backward read-compatible with previous-generation StorageTek T10000A and T10000B drives, Cates observed.

“It’s all about future-proofing your environment and giving you the opportunity for growth,” Cates said.

Tape remains a cost-effective storage technology, and the industry’s active road maps and investments signal that it will be able to keep pace with alternate storage technologies, Amatruda observed. The technology also provides true removability to remote locations for a true disaster-recovery plan while requiring much less power and cooling than disk solutions, he added.

“As a result, at IDC we believe tape will remain a viable and cost-effective solution for the foreseeable future,” Amatruda said.

Tape data recovery

Question by luigi10liker: Tape recovery freeware?
Where can I find mini DV tape recovery freeware. I have overwritten a mini DV tape, but shouldn’t have, and i need to get the data I wrote over. I’d prefer not to send my tape into a company to have them recover the data, and I don’t want to buy software.

Best answer:

Answer by Technerd
You cannot ‘undelete’ a tape the same way you can with a hard drive as it works in a very different way. You’ve had it, I’m afraid. And if you could – it certainly wouldn’t be ‘free’.

We reorganized our "gadget drawers", managing to get 4 drawers of stuff compressed into 2 drawers.

I had such high aspirations for this tape drive. I spent 0 on it! The blank DC2120 tapes were or so, and only held 256M. You can get a 1G USB thumbdrive for less than that these days! I had a fantasy of walking down dorm halls and being able to copy any data from people on the fly, but the reality was that you had to carry around a floppy for the software, and the process was still quite slow.

I did at least use this to back up my BBS. And when my harddrive crashed, the only remaining copy of my BBS was on this tape. And … I can’t get it off the tape. I still have DC2120 tapes that need recovery! When my grandad died, I tried using HIS tape drive to no avail. I’m keeping the tapes, but throwing away the drive. I’d totally pay for data recovery service (both for my tape AND grandad’s tape), but have a feeling they’d want more money than that. Anybody know?

Many enterprises are making amendments to their business strategies for the management of information life cycle to fulfill the legislative instructions that dictate as how to record the information and time period for the information to be retained. It is the requirement of the service-level agreements that the companies should establish safe and secure mechanisms for end users, customers and stock holders to access the critical and valuable company records. Companies also have to ensure that at the same time the overall company infrastructure of data storage has the ability to expand cost effectively, flexibly in quick time. Disk can be ideal choice for the purpose of online data storage, but the data tape remains vital and important component of the company’s overall management strategy of information life cycle specifically for business continuance, regulatory conformity and data retention.

Dell LTO-4 backup tape products provide exceptional performance and data security tools to speed up regulatory compliance, routine backups of data center and business continuance. Its reliable features include 120Mb/s (native speed), 800GB of native space for recording data and data encryption mechanism. LTO-3 ultrium specification is also known as the super ½ inch backup tape drive technology. Each of the backup tape formats have their own disadvantages and advantage like the helical scan mechanism in the SAIT tape drives that help to lower the tape wear. Vendor lock-in is the major difference among LTO ultrium format and other tape technologies of SDLT and Super AIT. Manufacturers of other media and backup tape technologies can license LTO ultrium-3 technology from the organization of LTO program that is controlled by Certance, IBM and Hewlett-Packard. This is the major reason of the creation of LTO ultrium specification and also assisted to keep down the prices of media.

LTO ultrium3 tape drives have the capability to read tape cartridges of all the 3 tape version of LTO ultrium but can write only to the tape cartridges of second and third generation. LTO3 also features WORM technology for further assistance in the protection of valuable data. LTO ultrium-4 has the new reliable and advanced technology of encryption for addressing the data security issues. This powerful feature helps to write encrypted data to the ultrium data cartridges and the encryption keys secure the transportation and storage of sensitive and critical information. LTO-4 tape technology provides innovative data encryption tools that enable better protection of company’s valuable data. Dell LTO-4 tape format enables the organizations to perform their data backup operations at lower cost with high level of durability, performance and effectiveness. Data security needs and complex regulations have transformed the data recovery and backup process and have set new standards for data archiving & data encryption.

As the data security issues are becoming more prominent, therefore LTO ultrium program is continuously providing innovative and efficient backup storage solutions according to the demands of storage managers and security standards. Capacity of the LTO ultrium4 reaches 1600GB and 240MB per second of transfer rate with assumed data compression of 2:1. It also has the WORM feature and is also available in the LTO-3 tape format. Therefore the speed operation in VXA data tape technology reduces “back-hitching”. Data restore is the only available choice for the company in occurrence of a failure. But if the restore also fails, then the organization is out of options and there is not much the organization can do about it. All of the world’s plans for disaster recovery can not do any good, if the backup storage medium of the company cannot recover the stored information. That is why the VXA tape technology is well engineered to deliver the best, superior storage media and protect the organizations from such disastrous situations. New breakthrough technologies have been employed in the VXA tape format. VXA technology stores the data in the form of packets and is capable of operating at variable speed. In a single pass, the data is scanned multiple times by the VXA tape technology. These innovative technologies in the VXA tape ensure that the stored data is available when ever it is needed. The other data storage mediums cannot compete and beat the VXA tape technology in terms of performance, reliability, price and durability. Do not miss the March Special offers by ‘TAPE4BACKUP.COM’ on VXA tape and all storage media products. The reliability and robustness of VXA tape is simply unbeatable. VXA data tapes are passed through harsh conditions and extreme tests in order to check their trustworthiness and durability. In these tests, the VXA tape cartridges are boiled, dunked in coffee and even kept in cold storage to freeze them. Then the data is stored from these VXA tape cartridges by the VXA tape drive. These extreme tests have proved the distinguished reliability of VXA backup tapes. The VXA tape drive was able to restore information from the frozen, boiled tape cartridges and even from those tapes which were dunked in coffee. The data can not be restored in such extreme conditions by the other data storage technologies. So there remains no chance of data recovery in these situations using tape technologies other than VXA tape. The most advantageous feature of VXA tape format that it can successfully restore data from the tape cartridges that have been damaged accidentally beyond any other tape format’s tolerance. VXA tape technology keeps the organization’s data more secured, while the other tape formats are unable to match such highest level of data reliability, protection and security. The acidity of coffee increases the tape corrosiveness and the coffee oils adhere to the data tape’s surface. The thin layer of the tape media can be warped or distorted by hot coffee. Hot coffee can completely destroy the conventional tape media but not the tape cartridge of VXA technology.

Tape is one of the real old die hards in the world of data storage and archiving. (Remember those shots of the Apollo mission when the fate of the astronauts was in the hands of those whirling spools of magnetic tape in mission control?) But with the introduction in recent decades of a slew of more modern media – optical discs, memory cards, and zip drives, for example, does plain old tape still have a role to play?

If you’re a traditionalist, you’ll be pleased to learn that the answer is an (almost) unqualified ‘yes’. Tape’s enduring popularity is due to the range of advantages it offers.

For one thing, using magnetic tape for backup is extremely cost effective. You can backup your entire server on one mid-range tape which costs around $20. Plus, magnetic tape can be re-used. So you can copy new information onto tapes from earlier backups. As your data grows and changes, you are always making new copies and are not overwhelmed with countless spools or reels of tape.

Then, there’s magnetic tape’s long archival stability. Tape is no longer stored on open reels but in hardy cartridge formats which include DLT and LTO. However, the fact remains that tape is a contact medium. So the resulting abrasion will ultimately wear the tape out. Nonetheless, the lifespan of tape compares favourably with other media. And consider this. Drop a tape on the floor from a few feet up, and then do the same with a disk. Which one is more likely to work well afterwards? I think you know the answer. The fact is that any medium can fail. In fact, recent research has revealed that the shelf life of optical media such as DVDs is far less than originally thought. In fact, well under a decade.

What’s more, though tape is seen as an old technology, innovation has been going on. For example, the introduction of WORM (Write-Once-Read-Many) tape has provided additional security for data that is being stored for legal and compliance purposes.

Of course tape has its own foibles which need to be handled with care. For one thing, it is a thin plastic medium and so need to be stored in the right environment free from corrosive elements. A dedicated archival room is essential for effective storage.

And with regard to data recovery, you have to remember the following. Essentially, any data that has been overwritten is gone forever. A tape drive will not let you get to older data beyond the overwritten portion. However for tapes damaged by the elements, the scenario is more promising. Ultimately, though, the key to the recovery of tape data is an understanding the data that has been recovered, so the most powerful data recovery tool is the brain.

At the end of the day, every medium has it good and bad points. But magnetic tape’s combination of economy, hardiness and re usability give it the edge you need to handle all your data backup needs. Tape for backup and archiving has already clicked up a half-century of solid use and looks set to be with us for another 50 years at least.

Many people have a basic understanding of the principles of hard disks and data recovery from disks. Tapes, however, seem to be more difficult to grasp, while both tape and disk store data magnetically. This would make tape and disk principally similar. The fundamental differences between tape and disk derive from the fact that disks store data on rigid, circular platters, while a tape stores data on long narrow coiled up flexible material. The disk spins all of the time and can give you access to any sector on the surface in a fraction of a second. We call this a random access medium. The tape, on the contrary, is a sequential storage medium. The tape moves only when it needs to access data and if the data is stored on the other end of the tape it could take several minutes. Furthermore, we do not usually take the platters out of a disk. A tape drive is designed so that you can continue a new tape when one is filled up, so the recordable media must be removable. Another major difference for the user is the way files are accessed. You can use Windows Explorer to access anything on a disk, while this is not normally possible with tape. Put an LTO or DLT in your drive and if it was not written using a piece of backup software that you have installed then your chances of even identifying what is on it are remote. These different media have their own pros and cons. It does not mean that one is better than the other; they just serve a different purpose. Disks are suitable for fast access to any section on the surface and meet the demands of real time computer activities. Tapes are more durable and cost-effective in long term archival storage and data recovery. Imagine using a tape for your daily computer activities. It would take ages to load a program and open a file. And vice versa, you could use a disk for archiving data, but the cost per megabyte storage is not favourable with disk, and is it wise to risk your archival data by storing it on a medium that if dropped might never work again?. With hard disk, if the heads hit the platter then it may well be game over. Other differences between tape and disk are not as easy to comprehend, but nevertheless very important to the data recovery specialist. Tapes encode non-data entities that you won’t find on disks. These entities include File Marks and Set Marks, which are used as dividers for easier access to a selected range of data blocks. On a tape, a block size can be fixed or variable and in theory even go as high as 16MB. On disks, there are sections of usually 512 bytes per section. It is possible to format them with different sized sectors, but all sectors will be identically sized. End of Recorded Medium is not a concept found with hard disks. A hard disk has an amount of space available and all is accessible for use. Tape, has an amount of recordable media available but reading is only permitted up to the furthest point where data has been written. You write 20MB to a 300GB disk, you can still read 300GB of data from the disk. You write 20MB to a Tape, all you can read is 20MB from that tape. One major area of tape data recovery is the recovery of data following overwriting and tape re-initialisation. Overall, even though tape and disk may seem similar, the differences are major. This is why they are used for different purposes and each serves the purpose very well.
